In this period, there was a proliferation of engraving and other premium items as Colt’s and its distributors turned to these high-margin items in response to pricing pressure on the guns themselves. This phenomenon was most prevalent with Colt’s Open Top .22 sales of which far exceeded those of all of Colt’s other arms combined.
